Kakuzu was the son of a seamstress and a tax collector, both of which helped to shape his preferences in life. His mother taught him how to sew and, their family being in low-income poverty, made most of his clothes. His father had a gambling habit, and tended to spend their few funds on the slots or on other trivial pursuits. When Kakuzu was 12, his father died under mysterious circumstances that the police chalked up to "gang violence", however, his mother suspected that he had failed to pay off the wrong person. Kakuzu and his mother were immediately left with nothing but his debt, and could hardly afford to bury their patriarch. His mother, working several jobs until odd hours of the night, finally paid off her husband's death and passed away herself when Kakuzu was 22 with nothing to show for it. Kakuzu has since refrained from speaking about his family and resorts to a misanthropic existence unless he is obligated to do otherwise.
Kakuzu finished high school, and attended college grudgingly. The debt would eat him alive, but the education would get him a better job that would pay more. It was in his second year of college that he realized: money was the root of everything, and that the value of a dollar was priceless and would continue to tease until he conquered it for himself. And so, Kakuzu never returned for his third year of college and instead became a bounty hunter, working free-lance under another hunter until he could afford to go solo. In order to keep his identity uncompromised, Kakuzu decided to adopt a cover, and proceeded to blow through several part-time jobs before finding his niche in Cafe Akatsuki doing what he loves most: managing money.
